What size anchor do I need
Anchor weight depends on boat length and displacement. As a guide:

Heavy boats, boats with a lot of windage or anchoring in strong winds should take the top of the range.
Which type of anchor
- New generation (Rocna, Vulcan, Spade, Ultra): set fast in sand and mud and hold when the wind veers.
- Plough (Delta, Plough): the classic choice for a bow roller and windlass.
- Flat (Danforth, Fortress): light, very good in sand and mud, handy as a kedge.
- Folding grapnels: for tenders, RIBs and rocky bottoms.

Frequently asked questions
What size anchor for a 33 ft (10 m) boat?
For a boat of about 10 metres the guide weight is 25-35 kg. If the boat is heavy or you often anchor in strong winds, take the top of the range.
What is the best anchor for sand and mud?
New generation anchors such as Rocna, Vulcan, Spade and Ultra set fast and hold when the wind veers. Flat Danforth and Fortress anchors are light and hold very well in sand and mud.
Galvanised or stainless steel anchor?
Hot-dip galvanised costs less and holds the same. AISI 316 stainless does not stain the bow, cleans up better and keeps its looks longer.
How much chain do I need?
With an all-chain rode allow at least 3 to 4 times the depth, more in strong winds. Choose diameter and pitch to match the windlass gypsy.
