How to choose anchor chain
The right chain is the one that fits your windlass gypsy: diameter and pitch must match what the windlass states. DIN 766 and ISO 4565 have different pitches even at the same diameter, and chain with the wrong pitch jumps on the gypsy.
Guide diameter by boat length

G43, G70 or stainless
- G43 galvanised: the standard for leisure boats.
- G70 galvanised: higher breaking load at the same diameter, so a thinner and lighter chain at the bow.
- AISI 316 stainless G40: does not stain the bow and runs smoothly into the chain locker.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between DIN 766 and ISO 4565 chain?
They are two calibrated chain standards with different pitches even at the same diameter. Use the one stated on your windlass gypsy, or the chain will jump.
What chain size for a 33 ft (10 m) boat?
The guide value for a boat between 8 and 11 metres is 8 mm, but the windlass gypsy decides: diameter and pitch must match.
How much anchor chain do I need?
With an all-chain rode at least 3 to 4 times the depth, more in strong winds.
G43 or G70 chain?
G70 has a higher breaking load at the same diameter, so it sometimes lets you drop one size. The gypsy must suit the new size.
